german student here currently in year 2 at MUS so i can explain this from the inside. getting into medicine in germany is brutal. the NC which is basically the numerus clausus cutoff is so competitive that even students with really strong grades can miss it for years. Sofia gives you a real medical education in english, inside the EU, at a fraction of the cost of private german universities or going to places like Hungary or Romania. and the degree transfers back to germany through the EU mutual recognition directive without you having to sit any extra exams. that is the whole story for most of us.

moniqueallen7781 (Alumni) is right on all points. i want to add the cost angle because people underestimate it. tuition at MUS is roughly 8000 to 9000 euros per year and living in sofia is genuinely cheap compared to any german city. i know classmates who were paying 15000 plus per year at private colleges in eastern europe and getting a worse experience. sofia just hits a sweet spot of affordable, accredited, and EU. plus enough german students are here that you are not completely isolated socially which matters when you move abroad at 19.

greek perspective now. the situation in greece for getting into medicine is similar to germany in terms of competition but the other problem is that greek public universities are basically always in some kind of disruption, strikes, administrative delays, extended program lengths. a lot of greek families look at sofia and see a stable environment, english language program, EU degree, and sofia is actually geographically not that far from thessaloniki. you can be home in a few hours by bus or cheap flight. proximity is genuinely underrated as a factor for why greeks specifically pick sofia over say czech republic or latvia.

lucasreed (Aspiring student) said it perfectly. i am from crete which is further but the flight to sofia is still only about an hour and a half. and honestly the greek community in sofia is huge so you settle in fast. there are greek restaurants, greek orthodox churches, and most importantly a massive group of fellow students going through the same thing. my first week i already had a study group of eight people half of whom were greek. that social landing pad is something you cannot put a price on when you are anxious about studying abroad.
