IM rewards thoroughness and clinical reasoning more than any other rotation, so this is where you build the habits that carry your whole career. Master the complete history and physical because IM patients are complex with multiple problems at once. Then practice building a differential out loud, don't just name a diagnosis, walk through what else it could be and why. Attendings live for the student who reasons rather than guesses. Know the common bread-and-butter conditions deeply, chest pain, shortness of breath, diabetes, heart failure, and present them in a clean problem-based format. IM is detective work, embrace the reasoning and you'll shine.
