Charles University is the third oldest university north of the Alps. Students want to know whether that medieval pedigree translates into practical advantages in the modern medical job market, specifically when applying for residency in Germany, the UK, or North America.

So i keep seeing Charles University advertised with this whole "Founded in 1348" thing and honestly it does sound impressive on paper. but does that actually mean anything when im sitting in front of a residency committee in like 2030? or is it just a nice line for the brochure and the marketing emails. Genuinely curious if anyone here has seen it make a real difference or if its basically just trivia at this point.

honestly from what ive seen its more of a "nice to know" than something that actually moves the needle. like nobody in a German klinik is gonna look at your CV and go "oh 1348, hired." what matters way more is the actual accreditation status, your grades, your exam scores, that kind of stuff. the age of the school is cool for like, telling your grandma why you picked Prague, but it doesnt show up on any checklist im aware of.

i mean it depends what you mean by "weight" tho. like in europe people DO recognize the name, Charles Uni has a reputation as a serious old school, not some random new private uni that popped up to cash in on international students. so in that sense the history kinda backs up the "this is a real established institution" vibe. but does it get you extra points on an application form, no, theres no box for that lol

this is basically it. for Germany specifically what they care about is whether your degree is recognized (Anerkennung) and how your grades translate, plus your German language level which is honestly a much bigger hurdle than people expect. the 1348 thing is a fun fact you might bring up at a dinner party with your future colleagues but its not on the Approbation paperwork anywhere lol
