i'm in my second year here and honestly barbados itself is stunning but you have to mentally separate the island from the vacation version of it. you are not here on holiday. you are here to study one of the hardest curriculums of your life while also figuring out how to live on a caribbean island with no family nearby. once you accept that, it gets easier.

cost of living was the thing that shocked me most. groceries are expensive because so much is imported. a basic weekly shop can run you way more than you'd expect coming from north america or the uk. a lot of students cook at home to manage costs and you get pretty good at meal prepping fast. eating out regularly is just not realistic on a student budget here.

housing tip, do not sign anything without seeing the place in person or having someone you trust check it out first. there are landlords who specifically target international med students and charge double what locals pay. try to connect with current students before you arrive so you know the fair going rates. most people end up in christ church or around the garrison area which puts you close to campus.

seconding this hard. i got taken advantage of my first apartment because i signed from abroad and didn't know what was normal. the facebook groups for students at the school are actually really useful for finding roommates and getting housing leads from people who already live here. use them.

the social scene is whatever you make it. if you isolate yourself and only study you will burn out fast. there are beach meetups, student events, trivia nights at some of the local spots. the beach being five minutes away sounds like a distraction but honestly going for a swim after a brutal anatomy session is one of the best things you can do for your head. take advantage of where you are.
