valuemd (Admin) Only 12 Romanian universities hold this top classification. This thread explains what the advanced research and education classification covers, how it affects funding, research infrastructure, and faculty quality, and whether it genuinely distinguishes Iuliu Hațieganu from other Romanian medical schools.
jamalrichards6154 (Student) i did a lot of research before choosing between cluj and a couple of other romanian medical schools and this classification kept coming up. being one of only 12 universities in the entire country with the advanced research and education status is not a small thing. what i wanted to understand is whether it actually changes anything on the ground for students or if it is just a label that looks good on the university website
sebhall883 (Alumni) From what I understand the classification directly affects how much state funding the university gets allocated. universities in the top tier get more money for research infrastructure, lab equipment, and faculty development. so, it is not purely symbolic, it translates into actual budget differences compared to schools in the lower two tiers. whether students feel that in their day-to-day experience is a different question, but the resources are genuinely better.
jamalrichards6154 (Student) that is helpful context @sebhall883 (Alumni). i guess my follow up question is whether the funding gap is big enough to be noticeable or if the other romanian medical schools are reasonably close in terms of what they can offer students practically
seandouglas1138 (Student) i am in second year here and honestly the research infrastructure is something you notice. the university has partnerships with research institutes in cluj and there are actual grant funded projects running that students can sometimes plug into. at my cousin's medical school in a lower tier university she says research involvement for students is pretty much nonexistent, it is all theoretical. so the classification does seem to make a difference in that sense
