Guyana is a South American country, not a small Caribbean island. Students comparing TAU to AUC or SGU need to understand how the location difference affects everything from climate and culture to infrastructure and day to day living.

I think this is genuinely one of the most overlooked differences when people research Caribbean med schools. everyone lumps TAU in with AUC, SGU, Ross, etc and assumes it is the same deal, but Guyana is a completely different situation geographically and practically. first thing to know is that Guyana is on the northeastern coast of South America. it is not an island. it shares borders with Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. so, when people imagine the "Caribbean med school experience" with beaches and island life, that image does not really apply here. the actual student experience is much more mainland South American than island Caribbean. that changes a lot about daily life, infrastructure, travel options, and even how you mentally adjust to the place

exactly this. i came from looking at SGU and AUC before choosing TAU and the comparison people make online is kind of misleading. on an island school like SGU in Grenada you are literally on a small island so everything is contained, the campus, the student community, the social life, all of it is in one bubble. Guyana is a full country with cities, traffic, local politics, neighborhoods. Georgetown where TAU is based is an actual city with markets, residential areas, power fluctuations occasionally, and real infrastructure challenges that you would not deal with on a purpose built island campus. it is not better or worse necessarily, just a very different adjustment. personally i liked that it felt more like real life and less like a resort campus but i know that is not for everyone

What about the visa process specifically? i am a US citizen so i know i would not need a visa for a lot of Caribbean islands for short stays but i have no idea what the deal is for Guyana and for a stay that long. is it easy to sort out or is it a whole process compared to say going to Dominica for Ross or Grenada for SGU
