MD Pathway at AAU

MD Program

Doctor of Medicine (MD): 5.5 years

If you’re passionate about health, biosciences, and caring for people, a career in medicine could be a great fit, though success in medicine demands a thirst for lifelong learning and academic excellence.

Alexander American University will offer an innovative Doctor of Medicine (MD) program designed for students who have met the premedical program requirements, do not hold a first degree, but wish to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree. The program will deliver advanced clinical and academic training to prepare students for the challenges of medical internship.

Developed in consultation with doctors, healthcare professionals, students, and research leaders, the MD program is designed to meet the current and future needs of students, patients, and the changing healthcare sector.

Premed Program

AAU will offer a Premedical Program designed for highly motivated, qualified high school graduates and other prospective students seeking a career change, integrating undergraduate-level Pre-Medical studies with graduate-level medical education.

The five-year Doctor of Medicine program begins at the undergraduate level with foundational Pre-Medical courses taken across four semesters. On successful completion with satisfactory performance, students automatically advance into the regular Medical Program at the Basic Medical Sciences level.

Mandatory curricular studies are completed across fourteen (14) semesters over five (5) calendar years, corresponding to seven (7) years of academic study.

Note: Indian citizens studying medicine at Alexander American University are required to complete a total of five and a half years (5.5 years), including an additional 6 months of mandatory elective training.

The Premedical Program is designed to give students the strong foundation needed for the rigorous MD Program. Premed consists of 3 semesters (16 weeks each) and is designed for high school graduates or college students with fewer than 90 credit hours who are seeking admission to a medical school but do not yet meet the MD Program requirements.

Students can enter this three-semester program at different points depending on their academic qualifications. It offers undergraduate science courses and laboratories at the post-high-school level in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, English, and Calculus, contributing to the overall goals of a pre-professional education. Much of the final semester of the premedical program is taught by medical school faculty members.

Basic Science Program

The Basic Medical Science curriculum will:

  • Offer an in-depth program in the basic medical sciences
  • Present the range of problems encountered by doctors, and the solutions developed for their recognition, investigation, prevention, and treatment
  • Cover the principles of disease and therapy, and the ethical and legal issues relevant to the practice of medicine

Medicine is not static: every day, new research deepens our understanding of anatomical function, disease, and treatment. That’s why Alexander American University School of Medicine (AAU) aims to give its students more than essential medical knowledge, teaching them to be lifelong learners by taking material out of the lecture hall and into a fully immersive learning experience.

Basic Sciences will run four semesters at the campus in Guyana, with classes enhanced by educational technology such as Blackboard Learn and integrated 3D modern technology, letting students revisit lectures long after class ends. Students will also receive early hands-on clinical training.

Clinical Science Program

The Clinical Sciences curriculum will:

  • Give students the opportunity to record a history, perform a physical examination, and interpret the findings
  • Teach students to work independently, connecting clinical relevance to the basic sciences
  • Provide access to areas of medical practice students may want to pursue in their careers

On successful completion of the full curriculum and satisfaction of all other requirements, students will be conferred an MD degree.

Under the close supervision of clinical faculty, clinical students will learn to work as a team, analyze lab data, experience a physician’s typical day, diagnose patient cases, conduct physicals, and perform limited procedures such as stitching, blood work, and vaccinations. Students will also have the chance to network with physicians and hospital administrators, strengthening their residency applications. By the end of Clinical Sciences, they’ll have a clearer sense of which specialty they’re most passionate about.
